Summit teen's essay on a faceless doll turns into Bumbles LLC, a business with a heart.
Max Loefler of Summit holds some of his faceless dolls that were for sale at the Bloomingdale’s Trunk Show on Oct. 25, at the Short Hills Malls. The dolls cost $20, of which $10 went to Connie Dwyer Breast Center at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark.

SUMMIT — An essay to accompany college applications morphed into a business with a heart for a Summit teen.
Max Loeffler, who is now a freshman at High Point University in High Point, N.C., conceived of and donates small faceless dolls made by volunteers at his firm, Bumbles Dolls, to charities and hospitals. Bloomingdale's in Short Hills held a trunk show for these dolls on Saturday, Oct. 25, and donated 50 percent of the total sales to the Connie Dwyer Breast Center.
Max’s mother, Vanessa, said she’s not sure where Bloomingdale's heard about the dolls, but it might have been because of coverage by Comcast about Max’s initial donation of 300 dolls to patients at Overlook Medical Center in April.
Whatever the reason, he found himself home, on break, that Saturday, helping to sell his dolls at the trunk show. On Sunday, he returned to school, his mom said.

Max Loeffler stands by the sign for the Bumbles Trunk Sale at Bloomingdale's in Short Hills. He based the faceless doll on one his sister carried with her all the time at home and in the hospital. He designed the dolls, picked out the fabric and has a team of volunteers who help him make them.
